Top 50 trucking companies: Only the strongest survive
Trucks are “fear” in the industry today. But over trucking leaders say the economic slowdown is not the time to save for services experiencing overcapacity of the industry and shippers expected rate extremely low.
Let’s start with recent history: the current slowdown in the truck began in mid-2006. As a first step, the leadership believes that the carrier could be a small correction after a period of 4 years of high prices. Then, in mid September last year, the crisis has worsened. Freight demand has fallen from a cliff, and some of the best-run trucking companies began laying redundant workers and truck parking in the center of the flow of red ink.
“The market is the worst I have seen a request for transfer of view,” says Satish Jindel, head of Pittsburgh-based SJ Consulting, which at least two pieces of the truck (LTL) and loading (TL) areas .
Jindel is not alone in the assessment. Most leaders of the carrier, this is the worst slowdown in the goods passes in the course of their lives and some of them were extended lifetime. “I was in for more than 55 years,ยป says Myron P. “Mike” Shevell , chairman of the Shevell Group, which includes the Top-25 regional LTL carrier New England Motor Freight (NEMF). “This is the worst I have seen since the mid-1970s, before deregulation. It is the fear right now.”
