Today very few types of chisels are known to us. The basic use of chisel known to us is carving. There are many other purposes for which different chisels are used.

Woodworking chisels, metal working carving chisels, stone chisels, masonry chisels, hardy chisel and plugging chisel are the various types of chisels. In woodworking chisels variety of chisels are available for different reasons such as gouge, tongue and groove flooring, cutting dovetail joints, cleaning grooves etc. the chisel and hammer were used by human from prehistoric period.

Only difference is, in that period they were made up of stones. Many scientists are studying these stone tools to discover prehistoric human life style.
